My experience with the municipality of Balen is very disappointing. It seems as though the attitude towards residents changes when you have a different background. Respect and equal treatment should be a matter of course, but unfortunately, I did not experience that here. A sewage tax was suddenly increased from €75 to €370 without me being notified in advance. There was no phone call and no registered letter. Yet, a two-minute conversation could have clarified a lot. What is also strange is that in many other municipalities, you don't even have to pay this tax. Nevertheless, it is significantly increased here without clear communication to the affected residents. Instead of contacting them first, the file is immediately forwarded to a bailiff. From a municipality, I expect proper communication, transparency, and respect for all its residents, regardless of their name or background. Additionally, it would be nice if the accountant, Els, tried to be a bit friendlier in her communication with residents. A respectful and helpful attitude makes a big difference.

They charge 26 euros for an eID card, the most expensive in the entire province of Antwerp, and make it very clear to you that you are a foreigner and not welcome, even though we EU citizens have the same rights.
