Émile Bockstael was the last mayor of Laeken before the municipality was annexed to Brussels. During the First World War, while German troops occupied Belgium, he refused to be evacuated or leave his post, believing it was his duty to protect his fellow citizens from the occupiers. He skillfully negotiated with the German forces to avoid arrests and reprisals against the population, while simultaneously organizing food and social aid in a context marked by the blockade and famine. Bockstael defied German orders and also worked to establish medical assistance for the most vulnerable residents. Thanks to his courage, determination, and his ability to preserve the municipality from destruction, he earned the immense affection and respect of his fellow citizens. Two years after the liberation of Belgium, Bockstael passed away; his death was felt as a national loss by all of Laeken. A monument, created with the collaboration of architect Jean Rombaux and sculptor Ernest Salu, was inaugurated there in 1932.

A very small park with a lake, but cozy. Here people walk with children, feed birds and ducks

Just behind the Ennekensvijver pond stands the monument to Emile Bockstael, specifically on Prinses Clementine Square. At approximately the same level, Houba de Strooperlaan transitions into Emile Bockstaellaan. Emile Bockstael was the last mayor of the municipality of Laeken.

A monolith with a small pond and adjacent park. There was quite a bit of trash and empty bottles next to the trash can. A little respect for the park's cleanliness would be nice.
